                      Best free audio production software:
                      Audacity – Allows recording/importing of audio. Edit and add effects etc. to WAV, AIFF, OGG and MP3 files.
                      Linux Multi Media Studio – LMMS is a totally free program to work with midi and samples. It can import FL studio files and is compatible with standard plugin types like VST, LADSPA and soundfont2.
                      Reaper – A complete DAW (audio and midi). Download the free evaluation version (which is un-crippled) for 30 days. If you like it, you should then purchase a license. For $40, it competes brilliantly with competitors that cost much more.
                      Ardour - OS X and Linux. (no Windows version). Audio and midi. Many common standards are supported.
                      MuseScore – Free alternative for music printing software sequencers. 
                      Noteflight – An online platform for creating and sharing sheet music notation. Great idea.
                      Free plugins for use in Digital Audio Workstations:
                      KVR Audio – A Huge database of plugins of all formats. Participate in forums or use the audio glossary/lexicon.
                      Tom Gersic’s database – Another huge collection of free plugins available here. Thousands of them!
                      VST 4 FREE – A large collection of VST’s here.  
                      Seriously… if you can’t find the free plugin you’re looking for on one of these 3 sites…
                      It’s probably not worth having.

                      How stuff works, midi – If you know absolutely nothing about midi, then read this first!
                      thehomemusician.net– A good article on midi for beginners. Also thousands of free midi files.
                      Mymidifiles.com - A searchable database with thousands of popular titles.
                      The classical midi collection – Your first stop when searching for classical music midis.
                      Free loops and samples:
                      Looperman – Sign up as a member (it’s free) to get access to thousands of loops and samples, including acapella vocal tracks.
                      Free-loops.com – A comprehensive site containing free loops, midis, vsts, samples and sound fx.
                      Thefreesite.com – A large list here of links to sites offering free samples and sound fx.
                      Findsounds.com – Use this search engine (specifically for sounds)  to find the samples and sound fx you want. Set parameters yourself.
